Business pt.3
Donnie laid on the bed staring at the ceiling, it'd been about 30 minutes since that conversation with Big Mama. His mind was drifting, thinking of how his family would react once they notice he was gone, they probably already have noticed. His mind mostly dwelled on Leo, replaying their argument in his head
'OH REALLY!? IT'S SO HARD TO TELL WELL YOU ACT LIKE SOME EMOTIONLESS ROBOT ALL THE TIME!'
Knowing Leo, he's probably off blaming himself for Donnie's disappearance, dum dum... He sat up, staring at the desk on the other side of the room, how long had it been since he was home anyways? He got up and walked over sitting down in the rolly chair and pulling it up close to the desk. There was a little black bar laying on the greyish blue metal, it had a little glowing blue button, was it another TV? Donnie pressed the button and a little DING came out of the bar as the same magenta screen as the one the tv had popped up, only smaller. On the screen showed a typical circular profile picture with a text box under it. It was a computer, but what was the password? Big Mama never gave him any passwords. He clicked the little text box and suddenly another small holographic popped out of the front of the bar, it was a keypad. He typed in a pathetic 1234 and 0000 but neither of them actually worked. Suddenly, a popup appeared on the screen,
ARE YOU DONATELLO?
YES NO
Donnie clicked on the yes option and the bar made a little beep, the hologram disappeared, and then a little black stick with a red dot at the top extended from the top of the bar. It stopped once it reached his eyes, and a big red light scanned him up and down before disappearing, the light made another beep before retreating back into the bar. A robotic voice echoed from the bar, it sounded like one of those AI generators or something,
FACIAL SCAN COMPLETE; RECOGNIZED.
WELCOME, MASTER DONATELLO.
Donnie expression sank slightly as the machine called him 'master.' The screen popped up again with another text box and the question, 'What is your password?', above it. He started to type in his usual Bootyyyshaker9000 but then deleted the text halfway through, if he was ever gonna get out of here then it was best if she didn't have access to his normal password, he typed in fuckyouBigMama into the computer. It loaded up to an empty desktop with nothing but the internet and files app, he'd need to add a lot of programs if he was going to get anything done. He clicked on the calendar icon in the corner of the screen, the date read September 3rd, 2022, Donnie has been missing for 2 days... 2 days... He's only been awake for a couple hours- there was a knock at the door and Donnie's head shot around,
"Uh, come in..."
The door opened, three figures stood in the doorway, two of them were Big Mama's guards and in between them was,
"KENDRA!"
Kendra's eyes widened, a big, relieved, smile spread across her face, as she ran toward him.
"DONNIE!"
They both ran towards each other, meeting in a tight hug. The door closed behind them, a wave of relief washing over Donnie blocking the numbness he didn't know he was feeling until now. Thank god she was safe. Donnie pulled back taking a look at the state she was in. Her was down and really messy and she was wearing a white tank top made out of bandages and black shorts, she had a couple bruises and scrapes but other than that she looked fine. Fine... FINE! Donnie yanked Kendra's arm examining every inch of it.
"Hey- What are you doing?"
"implants! Do you have any implants anywhere on your body!?"
Donnie grabbed her other arm and examined it, looking for a similar marking as the one on his wrist.
"Implants?"
Donnie looked up at Kendra's, very confused, face, she really didn't know what he was talking about. He sighed let go of her arm, showing her the markings on his own wrist, her eyes widened slightly forming a knowing expression.
"Oh...?"
"Oh? What do you mean oh?"
Kendra sighed, and slowly brought her hand up, pulling back her hair that was covering a marking on her neck. Donnie's eyes widened in fear. Did the implants being closer to the brain worse? Donnie sighed,
"When did you wake up?"
"Yesterday. What about you?"
"A couple hours ago... What happened?"
Donnie scooted back, laying himself against the bedpost.
"They gave me meals, some sloppy mush. No one talked to me till Big Mama came in and took me out of my cell. The second the door was open I punched her in the face and tried to bolt for it but-"
She paused and Donnie could figure out what she was gonna say next.
"She give you the same offer?"
"Offer? She threw me in the room next door and told me to wait 30 minutes for the guards to come and get me. They didn't tell me they were bringing me to you. She gave you an offer?"
"She wants me to build tech for her. To make the Battle Nexus more flashy."
Kendra's expression turned to one of slight fear,
"You said no, right?"
Donnie stayed silent, avoiding eye contact.
"Right?"
He crossed his arms and she sighed, throwing herself backwards so she was laying down now.
"It's not that bad, I get all this space, we get free range of the hotel, and we've really got no surveillance, except for that guard that's gonna come watch over me in a couple months. Plus, we're not living in the dungeons so it shouldn't be to hard to get by until I find a way for us to escape."
Donnie's voice wasn't very convincing, he was trying to look at a bright side but it wasn't really working. There was a moment of silence between the two before Kendra let out a tired sigh.
"Can I sit next to you?"
Donnie put one arm down and patted the spot next to him. Kendra crawled up from the edge of the bed, comfortably placing herself next to Donnie as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"What are we going to do?"
Donnie stared at the strands of purple hair brushing up against his plastron before he put an arm around Kendra and rested his head on top of hers.
"I don't know..."
KENDRA'S BACKKKKKKKK!!!!!! I'm very excited to start writing these two together again! anyways the next couple chapters/parts might be a bit of timeskippy so if they are i'll put a warning at the top. I will be returning to the brothers next chapters as well as introducing a new character! :0 so stay tuned for that. My mind is being flooded of ideas for Kendra's design in this part so I might draw that, I also have some Mikey and Raph designs in the works that will be out very soon! Anyways, I hope you all are enjoying the fic so far!

3rd January, 2024...harsh
@prongsfoot-microfic
...
No dreary is as dreary as dreary weather. No weather is as dreary as an overcast sky.
Chill, chill, chill. Sirius Black felt the chill deep in his bones. The blackened kettle boiled, a thin hiss of steam rounding the empty kitchen. The ragged man heaved the kettle and poured himself a generous serve of tea — no sugar. Cheap habits suit a dodged man.
A bit of the sky overlooked the long windows , shadowing the tattered carpets. The solitary companion of the battered room leant back on one of the moth-eaten couches by one of the broken windows.
The cup warmed his knuckled hands, steaming the January air. It was cold, too cold.
Perihelion, Sirius remembered. It is Perihelion. He couldn't recall if it had anything to do with the cold, but he remembered the word. Perihelion. How painstakingly he had studied the skies. All the dreams of astronomy.
All the dreams. Suddenly, Sirius felt acutely aware of the cup he held in his hands. He had picked up the chipped, discoloured cup with no distinction...but he saw a resemblance now.
He turned the cup around. Where his palm had rested, there was a small indent. There were small letters etched amidst the patches of blue dotted with white.
To Sirius Obnoxious Black, my best friend
Astronomy craft fair, 3rd January, 7th Year. He swallowed, looking away. Was the sky darker or was it the spotty window pane? There, the sun was dipping. It would be night soon. Another night. Another dreamless sleep.
Routine, routine—one he never dreamt of.
He sighed. I love you so damn much. He raised the cup to his lips, and stopped. I hate that so damn much.
He felt ugly, and he was. Would James like him as he was now? See me now, golden boy. Would you still be here? Would you help? Of course not, I never helped you either. If I ever had, it all went down the drain on—
He drained the steaming cup. When he put it down, his nose had fogged up. If he had known, would Harry be introducing him as his Godfather now? Or as his uncle? He rubbed his knuckles across his dampened nose, lowered the cup to his knee.
Snow fell akin to chilled glitter by his side, against the window. Maybe, he couldn't tell. But it had been a snowy, dreary sky all day.
He looked down into the watery dregs of the tea, eyes unfocused and subtly teary.
"You're too harsh on me", he said, his voice like the echo of an empty cup.
....
Thoughts??? Pls??? Encouragement???
Also ik no one is going to critically analyse this so I'm just gonna analyse it for you cause boy I put way too much thought into this.
It's by the Harsh prompt. And the harsh here is subtle. Atleast I tried to make it subtle lol idk if it was. Harsh is what is echoed throught this wall of text. Harsh weather, harsh cold, harsh house, harsh thoughts. It's supposed to be the undertone.
Anyways, the ending is ambiguous and up for interpretation. He is looking into the dregs of the tea, so one can assume that he is staring at his reflection in the cup and he is referring to himself and acknowledging his harmful thought processes. His eyes are unfocused so you can also reason that he is staring at the cup and referring to James, feel free to interpret why he thinks he was harsh. Or he might just be accusing the world in general and vocalising his situation and emotion
Well lol that's it pls tell me what you think of this and what your interpretation is (sorry for the literary ramble)

Arts and Architecture
On Wednesday morning we visited the Museum of Sydney, a small building on the site of the original governor’s house that taught us a lot about the city’s origins. Much of it echoes Euro-Indigenous conflicts with which I was already familiar, but it was interesting to learn about specifics. The first governor, Arthur Phillip, showed a somewhat admirable inclination to learn about the indigenous peoples’ perspectives, but when they (the Gadigal people) decided they wanted little to do with the English and started avoiding them, Phillip decided to implement his initiative by kidnapping two men and holding them hostage in his house while trying to get them to interpret their language and culture. And then he was shocked when one of the hostages, Bennelong, who had been charming and cooperative, escaped as soon as they removed the shackle from his leg. (Pikachu face) who could have predicted?! For Bart the history provoked questions of what the most ethical version of first contact would have looked like, given that leaving the first Australians in isolation would have left them without the benefits of trade, but also that it might be impossible to ethically organize trade arrangements with a people that had completely different concepts of ownership, territory, institutions in general, etc. And that’s also setting aside the whole inevitable devastation of smallpox thing. Should the British have just established a barricade around the entire island to prevent any European from bringing the disease? What a different world that would have been.
Another part of the museum had an exhibition of artwork supported by the Coomaditchie center, which was a center for Indigenous culture established during the (relatively late) efforts at Indigenous policy reform in the 1960s. I really enjoyed these artworks in particular:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First painting: Black Swan, by Allison Day
Second painting: Our Fish II, by Allison Day and Dereke Brown
The dots and lines style is so cool, and I love the earth-toned color palettes.
Our next cultural experience, in some ways at the opposite end of the establishment spectrum, was an evening at the Sydney Opera House. We went to a performance of “great opera hits”, which was not necessarily the first choice for either of us but was better than all the alternative performances that were on (a Cinderella opera and a Beatles tribute show………. Oof.) There were a couple of arias we really enjoyed — the Habanera from Carmen, which also features (instrumentally) in Up, and E lucevan le stelle from Tosca, which had really beautiful imagery in addition to the lovely voice of the tenor who sang it. I also enjoyed the “Flower Duet”. But overall, I think most opera is not for me — some combination of what feels like a lack of momentum in the music, plus I find the high dramatic soprano notes kind of uncomfortable to listen to. But! I expanded my cultural touchpoints, and I also got to be inside the Opera House, which was super cool.

To be honest, my first impression walking into the building, which you do from the ground floor level, was: this feels like the DC metro. Lots of concrete, maybe some uplighting. But you go upstairs into the area around the concert hall, and it becomes incredibly airy. This was extra special in the gloaming just before sunset.
Two obligatory “we’re alive and really here and not kidnapped” photos in front of the view follow:

On Thursday morning we visited the White Rabbit gallery, a free museum of contemporary Chinese art. Also very small, it was the right size for an hourlong visit. Many of the art pieces did not speak to me, but there was one that delighted us both and, according to Bart, made the whole trip worth it on its own. Big words. Let me explain.
You take an elevator to the 3rd floor and step out into a room full of trash cans. Comme ca:
Tumblr media
Actually, their lids were closed when we arrived. The docent says to you: “We’re almost ready to have them play automatically.” You think: oh, must be pretty fiddly that they are still working on whatever it is, but I suppose we’ll get to see it happen manually. Then she says: “The performance is about to begin.”
The trash can lids all open up and you can hear an orchestra tuning up. There’s one instrument per trash can. The lids close. After a moment, they open again, and you hear the opening notes of Beethoven’s 5th. Dah dah dah DAHH. Oh. Wow.
After the performance, the lids close. We have to let the trash cans rest for two minutes, but then we can wander through them and open each lid at will. When you open it, you hear the particular instrument assigned to the can as they play through the piece again — clarinet, violin, cello, oboe, bass. Trumpets, too, if you’re lucky. There was a map to show you which instrument was where, which allowed me to find the one (!) viola. It was so fun to walk through and feel like you were enabling the performance by letting an instrument’s voice be heard. Also, what a great piece.
Bart and I had only two constructive suggestions (ha, arrogant, I know). First, we thought it would be cool in the automated performance part for each lid to open only when the instrument was playing. Second, Bart thought it would be fun in the interactive portion for the viewers to modulate the volume with how far open the lid was. But overall, a total delight. (And it checked Bart’s box for unexpected good music, which is all he really wants in a vacation. Oh, and good tea, but we got that at the tearoom downstairs.) The artist’s name was Shyu Ruey-Shiann, I think, and the orchestra was the Taiwanese symphony orchestra, again, I think, because unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the wall label.
The other piece I liked in the museum was an autobiographical series by Yu Hong, which depicted a number of self-portraits at different ages reflecting the artist’s growth in parallel with the tectonic changes in China over her lifetime. This is the closing pair of paintings:

We walked back through a fun university-ish neighborhood — look at the greenery!
Tumblr media
and we saw this fun street sculpture:
Tumblr media
And that was another day and a half in Sydney. This afternoon (in about 10 minutes) we are heading out to the zoo with friends who are also in town for the wedding. I am a little concerned it will be somewhat depressing, as my last zoo visit was, but you can’t go to Australia and *not* see a koala or a kangaroo, so here we go!

Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen Review
Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen Review
The Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen arrives with a visual makeover to raise the benchmark set by the older Echo Dot speakers. It undoubtedly brings several changes over the 3rd Gen Echo Dot but also costs slightly higher, at Rs, 4,499. Amazon has moved on from the hockey puck-like shape to a spherical shape, that resembles a bonsai version of the bigger Echo 4th Gen. Many of us look at the Echo Dot as…
